Great app, love the privacy aspect, how quick and easy it is to use, and the wide variety of chat features it has. The look and feel isn't totally my vibe, but the customization options are able to account for that at least a bit. Has a few rough edges, especially with the calls. Otherwise, excellent secure messaging app, I'm sure that it will improve with time :)

As a messaging app on the phone, I have no complaints! Good reliability, good for sharing photos as well! Audio calls are quite good as well. However, I think it is subpar for video calls. Bad experience compared to alternatives honestly, although I appreciate the privacy anyway. The Windows app is less reliable and has more issues with photos especially. Not a part of this review but may be relevant for some who want a unified messaging platform across devices.

As far as I know, Signal has the best security and anonymity implementations amongst the popular the popular chat clients. Unfortunately, it has not been perfect for moving from phone to phone though without losing messages. I can't see historical chats from before the transfer on my new phone! That said, it's been a solid app. I can share messages between my laptop, iPad and phone without missing a beat.

Update: time stamps have been all messed up. just sent a message and it says i sent it 8 hours ago. same shows in recipients end. usually happens when i send from desktop application of Signal. Have been using it for years and it's always improving. It's a messenger. Send and receive messages in the form of text, video, audio. It doesn't need the bells and whistles. When you share a link and then reopen Signal, the link is still in the text box even if you had already sent it.

there are a few bad UI/UX elements that make you question the devs. When you hold down on a message and the menu pops up it covers the message with the menu so you can't see the message or tap to deselect it. The "sent" "lock" and checkmark icons on every single message are annoying. I don't need to see that, get rid of em. make the bubbles a different color if you have too. Only make me see it when something is wrong, not during normal operation. I can always click on text to find more info

Excellent messaging app. It does everything that a full-featured messaging app should do. My only complaint is with its periodic PIN verification mechanism. It's really unnecessary. They should just stick to fingerprint verification and dump the code punching. Also, it would be great to have cloud backup in the app, instead of only doing a local device backup and me having to upload it to Google drive myself.

Video panel is lost after minimizing and using other apps. Earlier, I had to video call the same person again to get access to the video call. But now, it says "cellular call in progress". So there is no way for me to access the video call if I switch apps. only way is to cut the call from the other person's side and request them to call again. please fix this bug!

I have to change my review from 5 stars to 4 stars simply due to the fact that on Android platform, camera quality is so severely downgraded that I commonly switch to my phone's actual camera. Also, when flash is set on, it only works for pictures. If you take a video with flash toggled on, you do not get light during the video. Also Signal, you should really add a flip camera button like you have for video calling. This is a very well made app. With a couple patches, this app could be perfect!!

I really like using this app knowing it's a nonprofit and more secure than any other app I know. Tiny settings like incognito keyboard make it feel like it's privacy focused, and it's reassuring knowing these messages aren't being tapped into. The fingerprint/PIN lock is also nice (but a bit weird). Still this app feels very clunky at times. Maybe when I want to send a photo I don't want it to take up the whole screen? I just wish it were smoother and more refined like iMessage.
Aoi Green (11-08-2022 08:21:53)
My only complaint is I wish I could receive/send my normal text messages on the desktop app as well. Maybe you can do some kind of proxying/bridge thing through the app on the phone. You know Google's messaging app has a web interface option that lets you send and receive SMS from the desktop. I'm not saying you have to do it that way but I am saying add normal SMS text messaging to the desktop app please!!!!!
Darryl Young (29-07-2022 08:34:28)
UPDATE: (It would also be nice if one could see a time stamp on when the messages were read.) I enjoy the Signal app but my one major disappointment with this app is that it doesn't give me messages in real time. If the app is open in the background, I will not receive messages until I close the app and reopen it. Please address this concern bc I do enjoy the app. In addition, the sound quality on calls could be improved.
Victor Jerome (08-08-2022 13:08:39)
Many messages not going through. Have used this for about a year without issue. Lately, many messages don't get through, especially during long conversations. Have to switch back to regular texting app. It doesn't matter how secure the text is, if it never makes it through. Samsung Flip 3.
Dragon Brain (05-08-2022 16:34:00)
I have had no issues, the app is robust, easy to use and intuitive (and, of course, secure). Note that I only use it for messaging at this time. Edit: the most recent update screwed up groups; existing groups I have with non-signal users trigger a "users that don't support Signal Groups" warning and messages are "MMS only" and fail to send. New groups with only Signal users don't appear to have any way to set the texts to "broadcast" so everyone's replies are seen by everyone in the group.
X (07-08-2022 23:37:26)
Today has started to constantly pop up saying, "Signal has stopped" even if you are not using it and you can't open it to do anything without it instantly crashing to tis either so you can't even try to send a debug log for it, it is unusable and if you try to reinstall or anything, then you lose everything because of the archaic way they handle backups and that sucks. 8/7 two days and an update later still unusable.
Doc Holliday (07-08-2022 10:35:06)
Love how discreet and private this messaging app is. No phone companies or signal can ever retrieve any messages cuz they come up encrypted end to end. Only the person u are messaging can unlock your message to see what you're saying. Add in disappearing messages and it's like the text message never existed in the first place. A must use text app for everyone.
Jay Legend (25-07-2022 14:18:19)
Been using signal for a few years now for their security and SMS feature set. I get to use one app for two types of messaging. Signal has also been very conservative on leaning to far forward with app overhaul and I actually appreciate the caution versus just draping color and material themeing everywhere. Straight forward and to the point you know what to expect with signal.
Tanis Kint (26-07-2022 16:07:38)
It's just so good. It's a solid messaging app in its own right. I've only ever had it crash once during a video call with very bad reception, and I've never had any bugs aside from that. The security is great. I also think Signal as a company I'd doing right by their users. You really can't go wrong with this app.
Andy Rink (12-08-2022 12:52:33)
I like the idea of secure communication. Setup is a bit teadious with regard to seting numeric or alpha numeric PIN. Also, you are not given the recovery code and dont realize it is needed or exists until the app requires reinstallment. It does not have the richness of features in other apps. Samsung Gallary and screen capture damage the app when sharing images, corrupting data and requiring a reinstall. Im experiencing this the third time this year.
Idont Agree (05-08-2022 14:09:56)
This app worked well at first, but I quickly found out it won't work without Google Play or Google Services enabled, and then app permissions for those services, that are unnecessary for texting. Not as private as advertised. How bizarre is it that you have to learn these things, after installing, and despite advertising? Google, free apps to refuse unnecessary permissions.
Justin Tolbert (29-07-2022 19:03:37)
No complaints whatsoever with this app. It makes me feel much more secure when communicating sensitive material and as of yet have had no problems with leaks or any other kind of information loss. It is by far the best app when it comes to private messaging. The fact that it lets you connect with people that are on your contacts list is a real Plus.
Steve Zywica (05-08-2022 16:52:27)
It's a great app. I just wish there was an option to require the app to be unlocked every time it's opened, and the pass code could be separate than my phone unlock (for biometric even a completely different finger)... Currently it stays unlocked for an entire minute so if you put your phone down and walk away anyone can pick it up and get in if it's unlocked... And then if anyone knows your phone unlock they can access the app too... Just a few more options would make this perfect.
TopHatCentury (02-08-2022 23:35:59)
Signal is the best social media app that I use for everyday use. The app is secure and operable between Android, iOS, Windows, and Linux without relying on Apple or Google specific apps for calls or chats. The openness and ease of use are great but there is one downside. The downside is there is no available method for communitcating with someone that does not have a smartphone. I hope to see a workaround for this issue or a dedicated app bundled with the new Microsoft Store for Windows 11.
Jan Fisher (31-07-2022 02:00:43)
I just signed up not knowing really what to expect, except that I loved the privacy aspect. I appreciate that it lets you know when a text is sent or received that the other person is Signal and protected or a regular text. But there have been occasions when texts haven't been received, or late (according to the sender) This could naturally be the Carriers fault so it's hard to determine. But, it still incomplete communication. I'll update the stars as I experience the app more.
Barry Webberley (23-07-2022 20:25:02)
Discovered the Signal App is more feature rich/user friendly than I first thought for a secure application. It is easy to use as a complete replacement for other unsecured text messaging apps as it allows you to communicate with others that haven't transitioned to a secure app yet. I'm finding editing the membership of the groups is difficult. When trying to add a new member I finally resorted to creating a new group. Unfortunately, I cannot determine how to erase the groups I no longer need.
Drew Gray (09-08-2022 13:43:28)
The good: Works well when it works. Excellent way to send full resolution photos SMS or over data. Like iMessage for the rest of us. The bad: Zero customer support. People cannot hear me on either audio or video calls. I have reached out to customer support more than three times and I have yet to receive any response.
Dora E Toledo (09-08-2022 07:10:20)
Have used the video occasionally. I have experienced blurring and or boxing of image at times. As of the apps other features, everything else seem to function well. Calls are clear, videos and descriptions of it are loaded quickly. I like the mic. I recommend it more for its privacy.
Vaidhe Theagarajan (24-07-2022 17:45:06)
Excellent alternative to Whatsapp, Messenger, iMessage, etc. It is secure, and not controlled by questionable business interests. I was surprised how easy it was to transfer to a new phone and have all of my messages moved seamlessly. I hope we can have one messaging platform that works across all devices and ecosystems
Ryan Nickols (01-08-2022 22:20:12)
I started using signal because I was told it was more secure. I don't know about the security aspect but I have trouble knowing when I have new messages... with notifications turned on I sometimes don't receive messages until days later. This is very frustrating. In addition, I don't like having to create a new name any time you add a person to a text thread. Other than that it's ok, but not my preferred form of communication.
Tj Hall (09-06-2022 01:31:25)
It's pretty good. I have a few issues with it though. 1. When somebody calls your phone line while you are on a signal call, it will instantly/automatically disconnect that call. 2. I have been having more problems making calls with the app, as of late. Other than that, it's fantastic. It was a 5 star app but these new and persisting issues are adding some frustration.
KS Lords (03-06-2022 21:06:36)
Works great for voice and video calls. I love the fact that all conversation are encrypted. Adding a message to a gif or photo before you send it really helps make the message cohesive. I really like the color coding for people. I was disappointed when the colored backgrounds for each person's message ended. Now it's just their name that is colored. Maybe they could make that a choice
Crystal Lynn Miller (24-06-2022 21:23:09)
It's good for texting. My only hangups are that it doesn't sink up well with the Microsoft To Do list app, so you can't easily send curated lists to people, and also there's not much for stickers, gifs. Also it doesn't work to well on the pc either with Windows Phone Link. You can't pick up from the PC easily. You have to copy and paste links from the phone to get to a page sent via this messaging service. So while it's good for messaging privately, it's not the best.
Ruby (09-06-2022 07:00:28)
Very user friendly. Useful customizations. Overall great! I enjoy the new feature that lets you fully view and reply to messages without actually opening up the app. However, I would like to be able to add a wallpaper/background for my main signal-viewing page, the one that lists all your conversations. Overall that is trivial. I do wish there was a way to name numbers who don't have signal accounts, as my signal currently isn't interfacing with my contacts. :(
T C (17-06-2022 18:51:20)
Not reliable. WAS reliable for last 2 years. Won't send messages for days lately. Can't use this app for critical communications. My boss thought I was ignoring him for the last 2 days and a couple weeks ago as well. I thought the last update fixed the problem. It did not. These failures to send texts cost my employer money. I have to switch back to Android native text app. Bummer. I loved Signal for the last 2 years.
CJ Howe (07-06-2022 04:01:22)
The app is pretty good overall, but two things. One is that the app just shuts down service, so things like messages calls won't go through. Yet I am either connected to wifi, or my cell service is clearly working. Another is the video and audio calls. The video call doesn't ring, but rather gives me no notification that someone is calling while I'm in or out of the app. Then I check the app and see just a missed call however long ago the call was.
Brian Hatzelhoffer (27-05-2022 16:10:30)
Love the ease and security. As someone well versed in cyber security. It is such a relief to find something that remains secure and doesn't interfere with a availability. I recently lost all of the data on my phone. Everything that was super secure has been a big issue ever since. Except signal. Entered my phone number and it verified me real quick. Didn't even have to enter any codes. It figured it out for me. I am sooooo happy this was easier than expected.
Matthew Keener (09-06-2022 19:52:53)
I like the concept of this app- texting without spying on me-but I keep on running into glitches. Messages often refuse to send. I try to resend them, but that typically causes the app to freeze. I sometimes have to try 7-10 times to send a message. I'll get phantom messages--a text notification for a message that doesn't exist. These always appear as messages that didn't make it through and that need to be downloaded, but doing so glitches the app. If these issues are fixed I'll gladly give 5*
William Clove (03-07-2022 04:15:56)
One of the better messaging apps for privacy and security, but after a couple days of using it I switched back to my unsecure app. I did this for three reasons: 1, no way to schedule a message; 2, doesn't sync with Link to Windows for integration with a desktop (I don't want a separate desktop app for Signal); 3, have had a couple messages not go through, and I need reliability. I may try again later, but for now it's just not there yet for me.
Frank's Place (26-05-2022 11:32:08)
To early to tell, but so far it's been working ok. All though a few times it has interfered with my Bluetooth pairing with my vehicle & also caused a freeze up to my phone having to reboot the phone. Other than that it seems to be pretty secure. And just now answering your questions at the bottom of this page, I don't see the area to submit? Oh look it just popped up, strange?🤔
Gemma Mm (10-07-2022 03:42:12)
I like signal. Seems secure. I can see all images in one place. I wish it would group all url links together too. You can search chat history. Works well between iOS/Android. 2 stars because 1) I can't use/download signal on my android samsung tablet. 2) I can't hang up voice calls or turn off speaker. I have to ask other person to hang up. When you leave signal during a call, and return, it takes you to chat/main menu, and can't return to signal call view. It has been a few months, not fixed
Matt Bischoff (29-06-2022 16:53:16)
I've been using signal for a while and the experience has definitely gotten better. It's never been bad, but new features definitely brings it more in line with more mainstream messaging apps. The only issue is that it only really works when the person you're talking to uses it as well, but that's beyond signal's control.
