Meet Oli, a fluffy white duck in a navy beret, a striped sailor's shirt and a red neckerchief. He stands on his little wooden jetty by a lily pond in Provence and plays the oboe, his wing tips covering the oboe's holes exactly as a real oboist does for every note you play. Fifi the frog, in her straw boater, leaps from lily pad to lily pad beside him.
Toddlers Oboe turns your phone or tablet into a real-sounding oboe made for small hands. Every touch makes music, so even the youngest players succeed from the very first tap.
PLAY
Eight lily pads climb across the pond like stepping stones, each with a water lily in its note's colour: big pads for the low notes near you, little ones for the high notes far away. Tap a pad and its flower opens and sings while rings spread over the water, wide and slow for low notes, close and quick for high ones. Hold it and the note keeps singing, slide across the pads to slur from note to note and wiggle your finger for vibrato. Every new note calls a duckling out from under its flower: find all eight and they parade round the pond, singing up the scale! Every note is a real recorded oboe. Record your own tune and play it back, and try more sounds: Quacky the duck, magic oboe, bassoon, clarinet, recorder and accordion.
REAL OBOE
The whole oboe lies across the screen: the cane reed bound with red thread, the black wood and the silver keys. Cover its six holes with your fingers, from the reed down, and every hole makes the note lower; hold the octave key to jump up high. A chart shows the fingering of every note of the scale, and the tuning fork plays the A the whole orchestra tunes to, the strings sliding into tune.
SONGS
26 songs, from Sur le Pont d'Avignon, Alouette and Swan Lake (the oboe's most famous solo) to the Can-Can, Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Twinkle Twinkle and Oli's own songs, each with its own band: a pastorale, a musette with the accordion, Bach's harpsichord, a ballet, a galop, a brass band, a gondola barcarolle and gentle lullabies.
• Magic mode: any lily pad plays the next note, so your child sounds like a star at once.
• Follow mode: the right pad glows, so little musicians learn the melody.
• Listen mode: Oli and the band play the whole song.
BAND
Play with the band at the riverside guinguette under strings of lights: drum, violin, accordion, double bass and harp. Pick one of ten grooves (pastorale, musette, gypsy jazz, galop, brass band, baroque, ballet, gondola, frog pond and pop) and every pad fits. Tap the big LA! button and Oli plays a run and a trill over the band, and add ten oboe tricks with one tap, from the orchestra's tuning A to a quack, a lark, a ribbit and a big finish.
GAMES
In Sunflower Morning the sunflowers are still asleep: play the morning song and every line wakes up a row of them. In Lost Ducklings a duckling peeps from the reeds: find the lily pad that sings the same note and it paddles home. Repeat Fifi's tunes as she leaps from pad to pad in Copy Fifi, and tell high from low with the lark and the cow in High or Low?
LULLABIES
Oli dozes on his jetty by the moonlit pond while little frogs hop across the moon's path, counted one by one, and the magic oboe plays lullabies with harp and a music box. A sleep timer slowly fades the music out.
